Fresh Faces Taking the Reins at SPD Faction: Matthias Miersch Elected as Chairman
SPD faction leadership changes: Miersch appointed as chairperson - SPD Group assumes new leadership: Miersch chosen as chairman
Here's the lowdown on the latest shake-up within the SPD faction in the German Bundestag.
The 56-year-old Matthias Miersch, a member of the Parliamentary Left, has snagged the top spot, replacing former SPD chief Lars Klingbeil, now Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance, in the newly formed black-red government coalition. Miersch clinched the victory with an impressive 99 out of 119 valid votes cast, while 18 MPs voted against him, and two abstained. Klingbeil and Saskia Esken, the current co-leaders of SPD, will soon announce Miersch's successor as the SPD general secretary.
In the race for deputy faction chairpersons, Dirk Wiese garnered 99 out of 120 valid votes cast, representing a whopping 82.5 percent. He'll be taking over from Katja Mast, who's moving to the Federal Ministry of Labor as Parliamentary State Secretary. Sonja Eichwede, Armand Zorn, Wiebke Esdar, Dagmar Schmidt, and Esra Limbacher were also elected as deputy faction chairpersons.
Derya Türk-Nachbaur, Marja Liisa Völlers, and Johannes Fechner were voted in as parliamentary business managers. The new faction leadership aims to be a "fair partner" in the coalition with CDU and CSU, while keeping the social democratic handwriting well in sight to ensure the coalition agreements are implemented.
Miersch and his team are no strangers to seeking cooperation with allies - he's looking to team up with the Greens and the Left Party in the Bundestag where needed, especially for the proposed reform of the debt brake, which requires a two-thirds majority.
Once held by Rolf Mützenich, the faction chairmanship was passed to Lars Klingbeil post-SPD's defeat in the Bundestag election in February. Klingbeil became the driving force in the coalition negotiations with the Union. He secured a substantial 85.6 percent of the votes in his election to the faction leadership, slightly more than Miersch now.
Klingbeil took over the office of SPD general secretary after the surprising resignation of the then incumbent Kevin Kühnert in October. When the traffic light coalition unraveled just a few weeks later, he had to ramp up his preparations for the heated election campaign ahead of schedule.
