SPD-Green Candidate Jörg Lukat Wins Bochum Mayor Runoff with 64.67%
Jörg Lukat, the SPD and Green candidate, has won the runoff election for Bochum Mayor with a clear majority of 64.67% against Andreas Bracke of the CDU (35.33%). Lukat's victory opens up possibilities for a red-red-green or black-red-green coalition, with talks already underway between the SPD and Greens with both the Left party and the CDU.
Following his victory, Lukat is expected to govern with a majority supported by the SPD, Greens, and potentially voters from The Left party. This comes after the previous SPD-Green majority in the city council was not maintained in the 2025 elections. The chairman of the Bochum SPD, Serdar Yüksel, has confirmed that initial coalition talks will first take place with the CDU, followed by discussions with the Left party.
Despite his defeat, Andreas Bracke of the CDU remained positive. He acknowledged that Lukat will govern with a likely majority, echoing the sentiment that a coalition involving the SPD, Greens, and possibly The Left party is probable.
Jörg Lukat will take over the office of Bochum Mayor from Thomas Eiskirch on November 1st. As coalition talks progress, the final composition of Lukat's government is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks, with a red-red-green or black-red-green coalition appearing most likely.
