SPD expresses concern over potential three-party alliance
In the approaching Vienna election on April 27, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) is gearing up for a challenging campaign. With the election just around the corner, the party is aiming to make around 60,000 house visits as planned.
Current polls suggest that the SPÖ is significantly behind its previous performance in the 2020 election, where it secured 41.6% of the votes and remained the strongest party. Voter turnout in 2020 was 65.27%, a sharp decline but still higher than in 2005.
Barbara Novak, the SPÖ party secretary, has expressed concerns about a potential low voter turnout in the upcoming election, echoing her hopes to motivate more voters than in 2020 to go to the polls. Novak is dissatisfied with the current projections for the SPÖ and has warned that those who underestimate the importance of voting might wake up with a black eye on election day.
The SPÖ aims to catch up with the polls for Ludwig, who could be directly elected by up to 60 percent. However, a two-party coalition may no longer be feasible, according to SPÖ's concern. In this case, a three-party coalition could also threaten Vienna, Novak said.
The SPÖ is currently governing Vienna in a coalition with NEOS. NEOS is likely to be a favourite for a coalition after the upcoming council election, which could potentially impact the coalition negotiations. The Greens, who were previously a coalition partner of the SPÖ from 2010 to 2020, could also play a role in the coalition-building process.
The SPÖ in Vienna is expected to exhaust the advertising budget due to the large number of activists involved in the red campaign, with approximately 5,000 people working tirelessly to secure votes. The budget limit for advertising in Vienna is €5 million per party.
Despite the challenges, the SPÖ's goal is to approach the result of 2020, when they received 41.6 percent of the votes. The party is determined to close the polling gap and secure a strong showing in the upcoming election.
