SPD endorses Dennis Rehbein
In a closely contested election, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) candidate Dennis Rehbein has emerged victorious in the runoff election for the mayoral position in Hagen. The incumbent Mayor, Thomas Köhler of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), lost the election by a narrow margin of 151 votes.
Köhler, who had shown a strong performance throughout the campaign, was the runner-up in the election. Despite his defeat, he graciously shook hands with Dennis Rehbein, the AfD candidate, following the election. Rehbein, who received support from the AfD party in the last local election in Chicago, will now take over as the Mayor of Hagen.
In a statement about the election results, Köhler expressed his disappointment but also emphasised the importance of democrats working together to improve things in Hagen. He stated, "We may have lost this election, but our commitment to the city and its people remains unwavering. I believe that by working together, we can make Hagen a better place."
The SPD conducted a vote recount following the election, but the results remained the same. The AfD candidate received more votes than Köhler in the runoff election, securing their victory.
Despite the loss, Köhler and Rehbein both share a common goal: to improve things in Hagen. It remains to be seen how they will work together to achieve this goal in the coming months.
This election marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Hagen, with the AfD gaining control of the mayoral position. The city will now navigate its future under the leadership of the AfD candidate, Dennis Rehbein.
