Uncompromising Action: SPD and FDP Demand Swift Budget Solution in the Face of Constitutional Court Ruling

SPD and FDP call for immediate passage of a supplementary budget - SPD and FDP push for swift allocation of additional budget

Get ready, folks! The budget drama in Schleswig-Holstein’s state parliament is heating up, and the SPD and FDP are sounding the alarm. After the constitutional court’s scathing rebuke of the 2024 budget, financed with emergency loans, they’re demanding swift action to avert further financial chaos.

Beate Raudies, an SPD finance political powerhouse, summed it up: "The ball's been dropped, and we're staring at a ticking time bomb. This financial fiasco threatens the very heart of Schleswig-Holstein." The state government must whip up a constitutionally sound supplementary budget and present it to the parliament without further ado.

Annabell Krämer, the FDP’s finance warrior, weighed in, "We can't keep playing budgetary Monopoly with taxpayers' hard-earned cash. If the CDU's serious about respecting that court ruling, they'll put their foot on the gas and correct their mistakes posthaste, not procrastinate until autumn when the federal debt vaults open."

Judges Slam Emergency Loans

On April 15th, the state’s constitutional court declared the 2024 budget unconstitutional, and the budget plan was a no-go if it contained authorization for taking emergency loans. Christoph Brünning, the court’s president, spelled it out during the verdict: “Budget plans containing authorization for taking emergency loans are hooey.” Plus, the government had neglected to propose a solid debt repayment plan.

The three emergency loans (2024 fiscal year) were propped up by the storm surge on the Baltic coast, the Russian attack on Ukraine, and COVID-19. The court acknowledged the crises, but it remained puzzling why they'd cause such a dent in Schleswig-Holstein's finances in 2024.

Opposition Dismisses Incompetence

Raudies fingered the coalition for glossing over fundamental constitutional tenets in drafting the 2024 budget. "Unbelievable! The state government either has its head in the sand or simply doesn't give a hoot about dusting off the constitution. This reckless ineptitude could spell financial doom."

Previously, Raudies and Krämer had petitioned the parliament for debt repayment law reform. Finance Minister Silke Schneider (Greens) is scheduled to shed light on the consequences of the ruling at 1:00 PM in Kiel.
