SPD advocates for additional actions against Israel and endorses halting military equipment shipments

In response to the ongoing Gaza conflict, the Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Germany has proposed a series of measures aimed at bringing about a ceasefire, improving humanitarian aid delivery, and ensuring a more dignified treatment of all people affected by the conflict.

The SPD's proposals include a call for an immediate and full resumption of humanitarian aid to Gaza, enabling the United Nations and humanitarian organizations to operate independently and impartially to alleviate the catastrophic situation. Adis Ahmetovic, the foreign policy spokesperson of the SPD parliamentary group, stated that each additional day of war means more hunger, dead children, and women, and danger for hostages.

Ahmetovic also criticized the recent decision of the Israeli government to escalate the Gaza war, and called for a full or partial suspension of the EU association agreement. Additionally, Ahmetovic proposed the medical evacuation of severely injured children in Gaza and suggested that sanctions against Israeli ministers should no longer be a taboo.

Norbert Röttgen, the CDU's foreign policy expert, supports the German government's decision to halt arms deliveries to Israel for the Gaza war. Röttgen expressed his views to the "Rheinische Post" on Saturday, stating that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic and that, as the occupying power, Israel is responsible for the humanitarian supply of the population. Röttgen also found it unclear what war aims Israel is pursuing with the renewed escalation of the offensive.

The SPD's positions reflect a balancing act of standing by Israel's right to exist and ensuring humanitarian concerns are addressed amid the conflict. The party has emphasized the need for a ceasefire, critical questioning of Israel’s military goals, continued diplomatic efforts to bring about de-escalation, and calls for a negotiated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

These measures, beyond halting arms deliveries, reflect the SPD’s broader diplomatic and humanitarian approach towards the Gaza conflict. While Friedrich Merz, the CDU Chancellor, has suspended arms exports that could be used in Gaza, the SPD's approach includes a more comprehensive response to the conflict.

According to Ahmetovic, even former hostages, relatives, and a majority in Israel demand an immediate end to the war in Gaza. Ahmetovic promises the SPD's continued support for further measures towards Israel, seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict and ensuring the well-being of all those affected.

  1. The SPD's proposals for the Gaza conflict extend beyond just halting arms deliveries, encompassing a more comprehensive policy-and-legislation approach aimed at enforcing a ceasefire, improving humanitarian aid, and addressing crime-and-justice issues.
  2. Politics and general news have been dominated by discussions on the war-and-conflicts in Gaza, with Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD foreign policy spokesperson, calling for a full or partial suspension of the EU association agreement as a means to de-escalate the situation.
  3. As the conflict in Gaza continues, political parties such as the SPD are focusing on humanitarian concerns, advocating for measures like medical evacuations for severely injured children and the improvement of humanitarian aid delivery, while also questioning Israel’s military goals and advocating for a negotiated ceasefire.
