A Fresh Start: SPD's Resurgence
SPD Adopts New Policy Agenda Through 2027
Berlin - The Social Democratic Party (SPD) sets sights on a new foundational program before the 2029 federal election, following their historic defeat in 2025. "The party can't rest on its laurels," remarked the incoming General Secretary, Tim Klüßendorf, in a candid interview in Berlin. In response to their previous election defeat, the SPD plans to redefine their fundamental values of freedom, justice, and solidarity to reclaim their political ground.
The transformative process is scheduled to begin at the party conference in late June. The new party program should be established by 2027, serving as a cornerstone for daily work and the program for the 2029 federal election.
Confessing Past Errors
Recently, the SPD grappled with a lackluster political package, admits Klüßendorf, leaning too heavily on specific offers for target groups, with individual political content taking center stage. Now, a comprehensive, programmatic clarification is pushing through.
In the draft for the party conference guiding motion, the SPD leadership acknowledges genuine blunders: "Our political messaging was overly complicated, often failing to resonate with the feelings and daily lives of the people, and was too often perceived as PR rather than a meaningful dialogue." Strategically, they've lost clarity, resulting in trust tumbles.
Party Conference with New Faces
In the 2025 federal election, the SPD suffered their worst defeat in the history of the Federal Republic, securing only 16.4% of the votes. At the party conference in June, the leadership will be elected, but a complete overhaul is not on the agenda. Vice-Chancellor, Lars Klingbeil, intends to remain the party chairman. Minister of Labor, Barbara Bas, enters the race as co-party chairwoman. Tim Klüßendorf is expected to take on the role of general secretary, passing the mantle from the new faction chairman, Matthias Miersch.
