Sparking the Process of Carrying Concealed Firearms

In the United States, an estimated 21 million citizens have carry permits, according to the Crime Prevention Research Center. This life-altering practice, similar to getting married or having kids, requires careful consideration and responsible ownership.

A good concealed-carry academy is not cheap but is a crucial aspect of carry comfort. The gun must be comfortable to carry and comfortable to shoot, and most find a compact or subcompact 9 mm pistol suitable. Sights are another consideration; aftermarket sights are available for most handguns, and reflex (red-dot) sights have become popular, offering precision but with potential battery failure as a drawback.

Off-body carry in a purse, satchel, fanny pack, or shoulder pack is less than optimal but may be the gunbroker's only option in some instances. Dressing appropriately to determine the carry method is critical. Some may need to carry inside the waistband (IWB), while others may get by with outside the waistband (OWB) carry.

Gun owners should seek basic firearms safety instruction, marksmanship training, and establish a working knowledge of the legalities associated with concealed carry and the use of force. A justifiable self-defense shooting can result in injury or death to the guns attacker, and the use of force must be tempered with legal considerations such as the immediacy of the threat, proportionality of response, perceived intent of the attacker, and duty to retreat.

For those interested in concealed carry, Jeff Cooper's book, "Principles of Personal Defense," is recommended. It discusses principles of survival in the face of unprovoked violence. NRA-certified instructors can be found at nrainstructors.org.

Hands-on training under the tutelage of a skilled instructor is highly recommended. Beyond basic marksmanship, one needs to learn how to present their handgun from their holster/carry method to the target, keep their handgun operational, engage a threat, and safely and properly secure/holster their gun.

The importance of practice and carry ammo for concealed carry is emphasized. Affordable options like CCI Blazer are suitable for range work, but for everyday carry, ammunition like Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, and Barnes TAC-XPD is advisable. The more expensive gunbroker pistol is more reliable with a wider range of ammo, delivers better precision, has a better trigger, and has fewer sharp edges.

Daily training and practice are necessary to maintain and improve defensive handgun skills. Police agencies typically train and qualify twice annually, but ideally, one should conduct some form of training monthly. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that the chance of a 35-year-old becoming a victim of a violent crime during the rest of their life is as high as 40%.

Gunsite Academy is the oldest and most respected firearms training school, with defensive handgun courses offered in Arizona, Tennessee, and Florida. Daily carry-gun interaction, such as checking for serviceability every morning and evening, is important.

It is essential to remember that carrying concealed is a serious lifestyle choice, infinitely more complicated than a fire extinguisher in your home. It requires a commitment to safety, training, and legal understanding. Always prioritise your safety and the safety of those around you.
