Spain is currently grappling with a severe wildfire crisis, as the country enters its tenth day of a relentless heatwave. Temperatures have soared to 40°C during the day and refused to drop below 25°C at night, creating ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly.

The August 2021 wildfires, among the most severe in recent decades, have scorched over 300,000 hectares of land, with multiple fires affecting various regions, including northern and central Spain. The fires have forced the evacuation of thousands of people, as witnessed in Tarifa's beaches in Andalusia, where 2,000 tourists were evacuated.

The main causes of these wildfires were a combination of record heat waves and prolonged drought, which created highly flammable conditions. However, specific evidence of human causes such as arson or negligence for the August 2021 fires is not readily available.

The wildfires have had a significant impact on Spain's landscape, but the extent of damage to cultural and heritage sites remains unclear. Large wildfires in Spain have historically threatened or damaged protected natural and cultural heritage areas due to their scale, but explicit reports on damage to specific sites during the August 2021 fires are not found in the current sources.

The fires in Andalusia, believed to have started from a camper van on a campsite, spread rapidly due to wind gusts. In response, Juan Carlos Suárez-Quinones, the region's environmental advisor, has assured the safety of the evacuated locals before they return to their localities.

Meanwhile, in Castile-and-León, the government will conduct an initial technical assessment to determine the extent of damage to the heritage in Las Médulas once the fires are under control. Las Médulas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an ancient Roman gold mine from the 1st century, was reduced to ashes in the wildfires.

Unfortunately, a man died from severe burns in a forest fire in Tres Cantos, Spain, 25 km from Madrid, on August 12. Hundreds of residents were evacuated from Tres Cantos, and one resident is suffering from chest pain. The fight against the fire in Tres Cantos had evolved favorably during the night and was considered "under control" by Madrid regional authorities.

The fight against the fire in Las Médulas, however, is expected to be very difficult due to bad weather conditions and winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. Approximately 700 people have been evacuated from Las Médulas.

Juan Carlos Suárez-Quinones, the region's environmental advisor, stated that many of the fires in Castile and León are intentional. Spain is currently intervening in 32 forest fires in Castile and León, many of which are simultaneous.

The severe heatwave is expected to continue until Sunday, according to the local meteorological agency, leaving Spain on high alert for further wildfires. Antonio Sanz, Andalusia's interior advisor, stated that homes from the fire were saved "at the last second."

In a tragic incident, a Civil Guard agent participating in the evacuation in Andalusia was injured after being run over by a car. All regions in Spain are on alert, and the country continues to battle the devastating effects of these wildfires.
