Spanish soccer team Girona has announced the signing of veteran midfielder Francisco Moreno for the upcoming season.
Aston Villa Defender Alex Moreno Joins Girona on a Two-Year Deal
After a successful loan spell at Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno has made a permanent move to LaLiga side Girona. The Spanish defender signed a two-year deal with the Catalan club on a free transfer.
Moreno joined Aston Villa in 2023 from Real Betis and made 48 appearances in all competitions for the English side, scoring three goals and registering three assists. His impressive performances earned him a loan move to Nottingham Forest for the 2024-25 season, where he played 19 times across all competitions and helped the team qualify for Europe.
Girona, who had a disappointing 2024-25 season, finishing 16th in LaLiga and being knocked out of the Champions League first phase, have made several signings this summer to bolster their squad. Alongside Moreno, Thomas Lemar, Hugo Rincon, Axel Witsel, Vitor Reis, and another unnamed coach replacing Michel as the trainer for the 2025-26 season, have also joined the club.
Lewis Dobbin, another Aston Villa player, will spend the 2025-26 season on loan in the Championship with Preston North End. Dobbin joined Aston Villa from Everton last year but has not been a permanent member of the squad. He had loan spells in the second tier with West Brom and Norwich City.
With Moreno's departure, Girona is the latest destination for several Aston Villa players this summer. Jacob Ramsey, Leander Dendoncker, and Leon Bailey have also left the club, making way for new additions to the squad. Moreno could make his debut for Girona this Sunday against Villarreal.
