New Coach for Spain's Women's Football Team

Sonia Bermúdez, a former Spanish international footballer and current coach of the U-23 women's team, has been appointed as the new head coach of Spain's senior women's football team. This change comes after the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) decided not to renew the contract of Montse Tome, which expired at the end of August 2025.

Montse Tome, who took over as Spain's national coach in September 2023, had led the team to significant successes. Under her leadership, Spain consistently ranked among the top 2 in the FIFA World Ranking and won the 2024 Nations League. However, the federation opted for a change in leadership following the team's loss to England in the European Championship final on penalties.

Tome's tenure was not without controversy. In September 2022, 15 players, mainly from FC Barcelona, withdrew from the national team in protest against her methods. The players accused her of being overbearing and disrespectful. Despite these challenges, Tome led the team to the European Championship final and the 2026 Nations League Final-Four.

Sonia Bermúdez, Tome's successor, has an impressive coaching resume. She has managed Spain's U-19 and U-23 women's teams since 2022. Before transitioning into coaching, Bermúdez enjoyed a successful playing career, representing top Spanish clubs such as FC Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, and Levante. She retired in 2020.

The Spanish national team will face its first challenge with the A-team in the Nations League final four at the end of October. Spain will play in the semi-final against Sweden, while the German team will play against France to determine the second finalist. The team will be hoping to bounce back from their loss in the European Championship final and continue their strong performances under their new coach.

The Spanish Football Federation will implement new community and employment policies, considering Sonia Bermúdez's appointment as the new head coach of Spain's senior women's football team. With Sonia's extensive coaching experience, she aims to maintain the team's success in sports, particularly in football, as they face their first challenge in the Nations League final four at the end of October.
