Spain's national soccer coach Montse Tomé has been replaced following the European Championship final in Basel, with the team determining her departure.
The Spanish women's national soccer team has experienced a rollercoaster ride in recent times, marked by both triumphs and setbacks.
In a series of impressive performances, the team secured an impressive five out of six victories at the Euros, earning them a spot in the final against England. Despite a valiant effort, they lost the match on penalties, marking a bitter end to their Euros journey.
Remarkably, this string of successes occurred under the leadership of the old federation, with Sonia Bermúdez, a former star striker for Spain, having built her coaching career under the same heads, led by Luis Rubiales.
However, the team's loss in the Euros final against England led to a change in leadership. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) board has appointed Bermúdez as the new coach, replacing Montse Tomé, whose contract was not renewed following the team’s defeat.
Bermúdez, with significant coaching experience at youth levels (U-15, U-19, U-20, and most recently U-23), is expected to replicate her youth-level successes and prepare the team for future major competitions, including defending their Nations League title and competing in the 2027 World Cup. Veteran coach Iraia Iturregi has been appointed as her assistant.
Under Tomé’s leadership, Spain had previously won the UEFA Women's Nations League title in early 2024 and regained the No. 1 spot in FIFA’s latest women's rankings before the Euros. Despite the team's loss in the final, Tomé had been praised for her contributions to the team's success.
As the Spanish women's national team embarks on a new chapter under Bermúdez's leadership, fans and football enthusiasts alike will be eagerly awaiting their progress in upcoming tournaments.
