Spain's Men's and Women's National Soccer Teams Climb to Top in FIFA World Rankings

In a historic achievement, Spain's senior men's and women's football teams have taken the top spots in their respective FIFA World Rankings. This marks the first time in a decade that a single nation has held the number one position in both the men's and women's game.

Let's start with the men's team. In 2014, Spain won the FIFA World Cup, becoming the number one ranked team in the men's game. Since then, they have maintained an impressive form, with head coach Luis de la Fuente leading the team on a 27-match unbeaten streak. The men's team is currently in sight of the men's world record of Italy, who went undefeated for 37 games between October 2018 and September 2021.

Spain's men's team secured top spot in the men's world rankings with emphatic World Cup qualification victories against Bulgaria (0-3) and Turkey (0-6). They are also the reigning European champion and holders of a record-breaking fourth title, won last summer in Berlin's Olympiastadion.

The women's national team, under the guidance of coach Jorge Vilda, has also been on a roll. They are the current world champion and holder of the UEFA Women's Nations League. The women's team remained unbeaten throughout the UEFA Women's Euro tournament in regulation time, but unfortunately lost out to England in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the final this summer. Since then, they have maintained an impressive form, with an unbeaten streak of eleven matches, including their recent victory against England at Wembley.

The women's national team aims to retain their UEFA Women's Nations League title this winter, as they will play a two-leg tie against Sweden in October. The Spanish women's team is the current holder of the trophy, having won it in 2019.

The Spanish National Team's double achievement in the world rankings is even more remarkable when you consider that Germany was the first and only nation before Spain to hold the number one position in both the men's and women's FIFA World Rankings. The United States and Sweden are the only other countries to top the FIFA Women's World Rankings since its introduction in 2003, but neither has ever led the men's world rankings.

This double achievement by Spain's national teams is a testament to the strength and consistency of Spanish football at all levels. The men's team aims to win a second world title next year in the United States, while the women's team will be looking to defend their UEFA Women's Nations League title and regain their FIFA Women's World Cup crown.
