Spain’s DGT unveils real-time traffic map ahead of holiday travel surge
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has launched a new interactive map to help drivers check real-time road conditions. The tool arrives just in time for the busy holiday season, with 22.4 million journeys expected across the country.
The map covers the entire national road network, displaying incidents such as severe weather, traffic jams, and circulation restrictions. It also marks surveillance cameras and speed radars. Users can search by province, town, road, or kilometre marker to find specific routes.
The system uses a colour-coded alert system to indicate road status. Black signals a full closure, typically due to heavy snow. Red warns of severe congestion or snow, limiting speeds to 30 km/h and banning trucks, articulated vehicles, and buses unless equipped with snow chains or winter tyres. Yellow alerts appear on lightly snow-covered roads, reducing the speed limit to 60 km/h for cars and buses while prohibiting trucks and articulated vehicles. Green indicates normal conditions, though light snow may still cap speeds at 100 km/h on highways and 80 km/h on conventional roads. For the latest updates, the DGT advises motorists to follow its official Twitter accounts, @InformacionDGT and @DGTes.
The new map aims to improve road safety by giving drivers instant access to traffic and weather conditions. With millions of trips planned over the holidays, the DGT’s tool provides clear guidance on speed limits, restrictions, and closures during winter weather.
