Spain’s car production plummets in October as green models defy the downturn
Spain’s vehicle production dropped sharply in October 2025, with passenger cars hit hardest. Output fell by 7.4% compared to the same month last year, while exports also declined. However, production of eco-friendly and commercial cars showed signs of growth amid industry changes.
In October 2025, Spain produced 211,072 cars, a 7.4% decrease from the previous year. Passenger car output shrank by 9.4%, but commercial car production edged up by 0.9%. The decline was linked to factory upgrades and sluggish demand in key European markets.
Exports also fell, with 178,582 cars shipped abroad—a 10.9% drop. European markets absorbed 91.8% of these exports, down 2.3 percentage points from 2024. Despite the overall downturn, alternative-energy car production soared by 39.9% in October, reaching 84,153 units.
Over the first ten months of 2025, total production slipped by 5.4% to 1,913,122 cars. Yet electric car output rose by 5.4%, with 189,415 units made. Eco-friendly models accounted for 38.4% of production, totalling 733,679 cars. Factory modernisation, led by company management, played a role in the shifting production trends.
Spain’s car sector faces mixed results as traditional car production declines but green and commercial car output grows. The industry’s focus on technological upgrades and alternative-energy models is reshaping output patterns. Exports remain heavily reliant on Europe, though their share is gradually shrinking.
