Spain's Bonmati Leaves Hospital Prior to UEFA Women's Euro Tournament

Aitana Bonmati, Spain's two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has been discharged from the hospital after a bout with viral meningitis, just days before the Women's Euro 2025 kicks off in Switzerland.

Bonmati, a key player for La Roja, was hospitalised last week, missing Spain's final warm-up game against Japan, which they won 3-1. However, the team received a significant boost as she has since rejoined the squad in Switzerland ahead of their opening match.

Viral meningitis, as confirmed by medical reports, causes inflammation near the brain and spinal cord. Bonmati, who played a crucial role in Spain's 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup-winning campaign and their UEFA Nations League victory last year, expressed her gratitude for the support she received during her hospitalisation in an Instagram post.

Her fitness to play remains uncertain at this time, but she is expected to rejoin the Spanish squad in the coming days. The exact recovery timeline and when she will be able to play again have not been specified yet.

Spain is participating in the Women's Euro for the fifth time in their history. Their best performance at the tournament was in 1997 when they reached the semi-finals. In their other three Euro appearances, Spain reached the quarter-finals.

The Spain squad, considered one of the pre-tournament favourites for the Women's Euro, alongside defending champions England and record eight-time winners Germany, will face Portugal in their first game on Thursday.

La Roja's preparations for the tournament have been affected by Bonmati's illness, but the team will be hoping that her return will bolster their chances of success in Switzerland.

Aitana Bonmati's unexpected recovery from viral meningitis just days before the Women's Euro 2025 kickoff in Switzerland offers Spain's football team a significant boost, as they prepare to face Portugal in their opening game of the European-leagues tournament. The two-time Ballon d'Or winner, a key player for Spain, was hospitalized last week, missing their final warm-up game against Japan, but her return is a testament to her resilience and a potential advantage for La Roja in the Women's Euro 2025 odds.
