Spain switches Tome for Bermudez following Euro 2025 final loss
Spain's Women's Team Appoints Sonia Bermúdez as New Head Coach
After a historic run at the Euro 2025, Spain's women's national soccer team has a new head coach. Sonia Bermúdez, a former Spain international player, has been appointed to lead the team following their loss to England in the Euro 2025 final.
Bermúdez previously served as the under-23 coach of Spain's women's team before being promoted to the senior role. Her appointment comes after the decision not to renew the contract of previous coach Montse Tomé, whose contract expired on August 31.
Tome, who became La Roja's first female head coach, replaced Jorge Vilda who won the World Cup in 2023. However, her tenure lasted less than two years, ending after Spain's runners-up finish in the Euro 2025.
It's important to note that the change in the senior team's leadership is not directly related to the Euro 2025 final loss to England. Instead, it is a response by Spain to their best performance at any Euros.
Iraia Iturregi, another former Spain player, has been named as the team's second coach. The new duo is expected to build on the team's success and lead them to even greater heights in the future.
The Euro 2025 final, which took place in Basel, was a thrilling match. Mariona Caldentey scored the first goal for Spain, while Alessia Russo equalized for England. The final went to a penalty shoot-out, where Beth Mead and Leah Williamson missed their penalties for England, and Caldentey, Aitana Bonmati, and Salma Paralluelo missed theirs for Spain. Chloe Kelly scored the winning penalty for England, securing their victory.
Despite the loss, Spain's women's team has much to be proud of. They reached the final of the Euro 2025, showcasing their skill and determination on the field. With the new leadership in place, they are poised to continue their success in future tournaments.
