Spain Swaps Tome for Bermudez Following Euro 2025 Final Loss
Spain Appoints Sonia Bermúdez as New Women's National Team Coach After Euro 2025 Final Loss
In the wake of Spain's Euro 2025 final loss to England in a penalty shoot-out, the Spanish Football Federation has appointed Sonia Bermúdez as the new head coach of the women's national team. Bermúdez replaces Montse Tomé, whose contract was not renewed following the tournament.
Bermúdez is a former Spain international player who has transitioned into coaching. She previously worked with Spain’s youth teams, including the U23 squad, and this appointment marks her first role as head coach of the senior women's national team. Alongside Bermúdez, Iraia Iturregi has been named the second coach.
Montse Tomé led Spain to the 2025 UEFA Women’s Euro final but was replaced less than a month after their defeat. Tomé had taken over the role after the 2023 World Cup and led Spain to win the inaugural Women’s Nations League title in 2024. The decision was made by the Spanish football federation’s board shortly after the final.
The Euro 2025 final was played in Basel, with Mariona Caldentey scoring the first goal for Spain and Alessia Russo of England responding with an equalizer. The match went to a penalty shoot-out, where Beth Mead and Leah Williamson of England, as well as Aitana Bonmati and Salma Paralluelo of Spain, missed their respective spot-kicks. Chloe Kelly ultimately scored the winning penalty for England.
Spain's women's team finished as runners-up in the Euro 2025, their best performance at any edition of the tournament. This loss to England in the final was a bitter pill to swallow, but with the appointment of Sonia Bermúdez, the team is looking forward to a new era and a fresh start.
