Spain Swap Monste Tomé for New Head Coach Following UEFA Women's Euro Loss
Spain Appoints Sonia Bermúdez as U-17 National Team Coach, Sonia Bermúdez Named New Head Coach of Spanish Women's National Team
In a significant move for Spanish football, Milagros Martínez has been appointed as the U-17 national team coach for Spain, while Sonia Bermúdez has been named the new head coach of the Spanish women's national team. Bermúdez replaces Montse Tomé, who led the team to notable successes, including winning the 2024 Nations League and finishing second at the 2025 European Championships.
Bermúdez, a former Spanish international football player, retired from playing in 2020 after a career with clubs such as FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, and Levante. She has previously coached Spain's U-19 and U-23 women's teams. As the new head coach, Bermúdez will be the sixth coach to lead the Spanish women's national team in their 54 years of existence.
Sonia Bermúdez's coaching record with the senior national team is yet to be established, as she was recently appointed in August 2025. Montse Tomé, the prior coach, led Spain to a joint-record number of goals during the group phase of the UEFA Women's Euro tournament, remaining unbeaten during regulation time for the entire tournament. Tomé's Spain also won the inaugural UEFA Women's Nations League and qualified for the second finals of the UEFA Women's Nations League, finishing ahead of England in their group.
The Spanish Federation has decided to replace Montse Tomé as their senior national team head coach. Bermúdez stands fifth on the list of Spain's women's team top scorers with 34 goals in 61 internationals. Spain lost to Germany in the Bronze Medal Play Off of the Women's Football Olympic Tournament and reclaimed the number one position in the FIFA Women's World Rankings after their performance in the UEFA Women's Euro.
Iraia Iturregi, another former national team player, has been appointed as Bermúdez's assistant coach. Iturregi was the recipient of the Ramón Cobo Award for the best coach in the top flight at the end of the 2022/23 season and was appointed the head coach of Bilbao's Athletic Club in 2021. David Aznar has been appointed as the U-19 and U-20 national team coach for Spain.
With Bermúdez at the helm, Spain is set to defend their UEFA Women's Nations League title this winter and compete for the world title in Brazil in 2027.
