RTVE Acquires World Cup 2026 Rights and Other Major Sports Events

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE has made a significant move in the sports broadcasting landscape, acquiring the TV rights to the Football World Cup 2026 for €55 million. This is part of a larger plan to gain access to key sports events, costing over €360 million from 2025 onwards.

In addition to the World Cup, RTVE has secured the rights to the Spanish National Team from 2026 to 2028, the Nations League, the Tour de France from 2026 and 2030, the King's Cup 2024-2025, the finals of the European Championship 2025-2027, and other TV rights to La Vuelta Ciclista in Spain, FIBA competitions, and women's football. The broadcaster has also acquired rights to the Euro Cup 2028, the Olympic Games in LA in 2028, the Olympic Games in Brisbane in 2032, the Winter Olympic Games in Cortina D'Ampezzo in Italy in 2026, and the Winter Olympic Games in 2030 in the Alps in France.

Meanwhile, Mediapro will be able to launch its own channel to sell the rights to other platforms. This is a separate alliance from the one between DAZN and Mediaset, which aims to distribute the FIFA Club World Cup in Spain and Italy this summer. Under this partnership, Mediapro will share football matches from the World Cup with RTVE, while DAZN will offer all 63 matches.

DAZN's CEO, Oscar Vilda, stated that this alliance strengthens DAZN's ambition as a global platform. The Club World Cup, starting on June 14th in the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and played across 12 venues in the US, is a unique experience in a cross-platform, digital environment with high interaction and integration. The final of the Club World Cup will take place at the MetLife Stadium in New York on July 13th.

In Italy, besides DAZN, the FIFA Club World Cup 2022 will also be broadcast on Sky Italia. This partnership between DAZN and Mediaset is aimed at making the best club football available to all. The Club World Cup will feature 32 of the best football clubs in the world.

The total cost of these sports rights acquisitions for RTVE is over €360 million from 2025 onwards. The cost of RTVE's Spanish National Team rights from 2026 to 2028 is €60 million, while the World Cup 2026 rights acquisition cost €55 million. RTVE's acquisition of the World Cup 2026 rights was the highest bid made to FIFA among all TV operators.

This move by RTVE underscores the broadcaster's commitment to bringing top-tier sports events to Spanish viewers. The acquisition of the World Cup 2026 rights marks a significant milestone in RTVE's sports broadcasting history.
