Spain experiences an unprecedented, historic heatwave, an event typically associated with the month of August.

Record-Breaking Heatwave Sweeps Across Spain

Spain is currently experiencing an unprecedented heatwave, with temperatures soaring to new highs in various regions. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the current heatwave is reminiscent of the one that occurred in August 2003.

On August 10, the town of Zamora registered an absolute maximum temperature of 41.2 degrees. The following day, Lleida broke its own record with a scorching 41.9 degrees. The highest minimum temperature was recorded in Castellón-Almassora, with a balmy 27.1 degrees.

Remarkably, only two days in August have experienced normal temperatures due to the heatwave. In Segovia, a minimum temperature of 26.2 degrees was reached on August 10, while in Virgen del Camino, León, a minimum temperature of 21.9 degrees was registered on the same day.

José Luis Camacho, AEMET spokesman, reported these new records through a thread on the social network X. He also mentioned that the heatwave has influenced all days in August except for two.

The heatwave will return with more force on Thursday and is expected to last at least until Monday 18. However, on Wednesday, maximum temperatures will take a break and a temporary thermal drop will occur.

The days of August 16 and 17 could also be records for their respective dates, according to AEMET forecast. It's worth noting that the heatwave on August 11 and 12 has not had such high average temperatures since at least 1950, according to AEMET.

As of now, the hottest day on record in Spain's history was on August 14, 2021, when La Rambla, Córdoba, reached a staggering 47.6°C. This record-breaking temperature surpasses the highest temperatures recorded during the heatwave in August 2025, when temperatures reached as high as 46°C.

Sixteen communities in Spain are currently on alert for heat, storms, and rain. It's crucial for everyone to take necessary precautions to stay safe during this extreme heatwave.
