Spain ends collaboration with national coach Tomé
Spain's New Coach: Sonia Bermúdez Takes Charge
Sonia Bermúdez, a renowned former Spanish footballer and prolific striker, has taken the helm as the head coach of Spain's senior women's national team. Bermúdez, who boasts over 100 appearances for Barcelona and 61 caps for the Spanish national team, has made a seamless transition from the pitch to the sidelines.
Bermúdez's coaching career began around 2020, working with youth teams such as Real Madrid U19. Her tenure saw her claim a league title before moving on to coach Spain’s U19 and U20 women's national teams. Under her leadership, these teams achieved two consecutive European Championships and participated in the U20 World Cup in Colombia. Most recently, she coached Spain’s U23 national team.
The Spanish Football Association (RFEF) announced Bermúdez's appointment as the head coach of the senior women's national team in August 2025, following the departure of Montserrat Tomé. Bermúdez had served as an assistant coach during the 2023 World Cup triumph in Australia, where Tomé led the team.
Tomé's tenure as head coach, however, came to an end due to the team's defeat in the European Championship final against England and the expiration of her contract. This defeat, coupled with contractual issues, likely cost Tomé her job. It is worth noting that Tomé did not win a medal at the Olympic Games or the European Championship as a head coach.
Despite not leading Spain to a medal, Tomé did guide the team to the women's EM final in Switzerland and also led Spain to win the Nations League last year. Tomé was an assistant to Jorge Vilda during the 2023 World Cup triumph in Australia.
The RFEF has not specified that Bermúdez has led Spain to any World Cup triumph as an assistant. However, her impressive coaching record with Spain’s youth setups and the U23 national team has earned her the opportunity to lead the senior team.
Bermúdez's arrival as head coach marks a new era for Spanish women's football, as the sport continues to grow in popularity and success. With her extensive experience both as a player and coach, Bermúdez is well-positioned to lead Spain to even greater heights.
