"'Space Marine', the Warhammer 40,000 title, receives a long-awaited upgrade
Get ready, Space Marine fans! The masterfully revamped version of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, dubbed the "Master Crafted Edition," is gearing up to blasts its way onto modern gaming platforms.
The revitalization of this third-person shooter is the work of port developer SneakyBox, with producer Vaidas Mikelskas describing the update as a meticulous restoration, a "smooth conversation between the past and present." This restoration aims to preserve the elements that made the original stand out while giving it a fresh, updated appeal for a new generation of players. To achieve this, the update includes graphical enhancements, an updated user interface, improvements to the control scheme, as well as a visual overhaul of the Orks, taking them closer to their current depiction in the Warhammer 40k franchise. On top of these cosmetic upgrades, the game brings over 100 new voice lines to add some fresh dialogue to the classic gameplay.
The original Space Marine was developed by Relic Entertainment and first saw the light of day in 2011, receiving mostly favorable reviews. Despite plans for two sequels, the game's publisher, THQ, shuttered its doors, leaving the sequels in limbo. Sega stepped in two years later after acquiring Relic and re-released the game on PC in 2021. In late 2024, Saber Interactive took the helm to develop the sequel and released it to positive reviews. The sequel is now in the works on its own follow-up.
As of now, the rights for the first Warhammer 40K: Space Marine remain with Sega, who hasn't confirmed plans for a PlayStation 5 version of the Master Crafted Edition. If you're eager to get your hands on it, you can snag it on PC or Xbox Series X|S, or play it through Xbox Game Pass, starting from June 10, 2025.
