A Disenchanted Ally Slams Peter Obi: My Greatest Disappointment for 2027
Sowunmi expressed his discontent towards Peter Obi in 2027, labeling him as his 'biggest letdown'
In a tell-all interview on Arise TV's Prime Time, Segun Sowunmi, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dropped a bombshell, calling Peter Obi his "greatest disappointment" as they gear up for the 2027 general elections. Our website reports that Sowunmi's remarks stem from Obi's alleged hesitance to join the coalition spearheaded by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, and other opposition forces determined to dethrone the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sowunmi, a long-standing ally of Atiku, has been displeased with Obi's seemingly independent approach, lamenting that Obi had squandered the enthusiasm and goodwill generated during the 2023 elections, where he clinched over six million votes and garnered immense youth support, finishing in third place.
He remarked, "My greatest disappointment, as we prepare for 2027, is actually Peter. The reason is that I had hoped, in all his seriousness, that Peter would grasp the opportunity to challenge the status quo – not the way he's pursuing it single-handedly. Even if it ends in defeat, we'd say we gave it our best shot and unified the nation."
Sowunmi issued a cautious warning to Obi against linking up with the Atiku-led coalition, branding it a "selfish adventure," contending that the faction merely seeks to capitalize on Obi's popularity without offering any substantial benefits in return.
He asserted, "These politicians in the movement are merely exploiting his popularity for 2027."
Sowunmi claimed to have advised Obi months ago to make a definitive choice regarding his political path to prevent losing support from crucial opposition allies, stating, "I told him months back that if he hasn't made up his mind by May 29 this year, I'd be more inclined to back Asiwaju. The advantages we've gained by integrating him as a potential leader of the Igbo political force in a national context should not be squandered."
In addition, Sowunmi criticized his principal, Atiku Abubakar, for leading a coalition that appears disconnected from the PDP, maintaining that "any formidable opposition movement must be party-driven and not centered around individual ambition."
He accused the coalition of attempting to circumvent institutional structures like the PDP, insisting that such tactics might ultimately backfire if the coalition fails to incorporate the PDP fully.
Though Peter Obi has yet to confirm his membership in the Atiku-led coalition, his recent presence at opposition meetings has sparked speculation regarding his political intentions for 2027.
