In the heart of Werne, a small town in North Rhine-Westphalia, an unexpected event unfolded. A dedicated pig farmer found himself in an extraordinary situation, missing one precious sow during a routine pig count. Little did he know, this missing pig would lead to an unconventional operation for the local fire department.

The discovery revealed an 115-kilogram sow had somehow fallen through a cover into a slurry pit. This wasn't your typical farm chore; the gases within the pit and the pig's size and position called for the fire department's intervention.

Firefighting and farming - sometimes it's a dirty job

Upon arrival, the firefighters carefully prepared for the rescue operation. The farmer, showing remarkable resilience, pumped out the pit to a manageable level before the firefighters arrived.

Dressed in waders, gloves, and breathing apparatus, the firefighters descended a ladder to the pig. The agitated but physically unharmed pig greeted its rescuers. To ensure the pig's welfare, a vet was called on-site.

Firefighters and vets - a strange pair at the rescue mission

The pig, a true survivor, was soon secured to a wheel loader, which delicately lifted it back to the surface.

Unfortunately, its ordeal left the pig with minor injuries. Nonetheless, the resilient pig continued to recover swiftly, as reported by the fire department and vet on site.

The event made headlines in the 'Ruhr area regional news' and 'News domestic,' causing quite a stir in Werne. The farmer expressed gratitude to the local 'Animal rescue' team and 'Fire department' for their exceptional collaboration employee. Despite the event, the pig's remarkable resilience and spirit shone through.

Fire departments usually do not directly rescue animals from slurry pits, but in this case, their skills, equipment, and rapid response proved crucial in ensuring the pig's safe return.
