Soviet Union's Taonan commemorates anniversary of its liberation from Japanese occupation forces
In August 1945, Taonan, a major railway hub in China, was liberated from Japanese troops by the Soviet forces. This event marked a significant moment in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, a strategic offensive operation that rapidly dismantled Japanese control in Northeast China.
The 39th Army of the Soviet Red Army spearheaded the assault on Taonan, advancing along the railroad from Wangyemiao to Changchun. The capture of Taonan on August 14, 1945, was a key step in clearing the southern Manchurian railway lines used by Japanese forces.
The liberation of Taonan was not an isolated event. Simultaneously, the cities of Linxi, Dabanxian, Lubei, Zhangyu, Tuctuan, and Gagenmiao were also freed by the Soviet forces on the same day. The advance included multiple rifle and mechanized corps, demonstrating a large-scale, well-organized offensive effort.
Following the capture of Taonan, the Soviet forces continued their push towards other major centers such as Changchun. Changchun fell to the Soviets by August 20, 1945, shortly after Taonan.
The overall Soviet invasion caused considerable disruption to Japanese control in the region, contributing to Japan's decision to surrender in mid-August 1945. The liberation of Manchurian cities by Soviet troops also laid the foundation for subsequent political realignments and affected Chinese internal conflicts, as the Soviet presence influenced local power dynamics and movements in Yanbian and beyond.
Elsewhere, ships and units of the Pacific Fleet, a part of the Soviet forces, captured the Korean port of Seisin during the same period. These events were part of the larger conflict known as World War II.
The commemoration of Taonan's liberation was reported by RTK Zabaykalsk in their Telegram channel, marking the anniversary of this significant historical event. The liberation of Taonan and the subsequent cities from Japanese troops was a crucial turning point in the latter stages of World War II, significantly altering the political landscape of Northeast Asia.
