Southwest Police Department Decides Against Nominating Esken for Federal Board Position Once More
In a recent development, Saskia Esken, the current chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has stepped down from her role effective June 27, 2025. Bärbel Bas succeeded Esken, who had served as chairwoman since December 2019.
The Baden-Württemberg SPD executive committee proposed Andreas Stoch, Katja Mast, and Isabel Cademartori as potential federal board members. However, Esken's candidacy for the federal board is still possible, even without her regional branch's nomination.
Esken's tenure as chairwoman was marked by internal challenges, including peace policy debates and coalition negotiations under new government leadership involving CDU head Friedrich Merz. Despite these challenges, Esken served as co-leader with Lars Klingbeil since 2021, and Klingbeil remains influential in the party.
Sascha Binder, the state general secretary, criticized Esken, stating that cabinet posts should go to those with party and public trust. Binder believes that Esken is not among the four best candidates for the four available cabinet posts. Katja Pähle, an SPD presidency member, defended Esken, stating that she cannot be solely blamed for the defeat in the federal election.
It is important to note that Esken is still a member of the Bundestag and is not standing again for SPD party leadership. Any potential controversy or candidacy regarding her re-election as party chairwoman has been resolved by her stepping down and passing the role to Bas.
