Southern Russia Braces for Extreme Weather Mix: Warm Temperatures, Heavy Storms

Southern Russia is bracing for a mix of extreme weather this week, with unusually warm temperatures and heavy storms expected along the Black Sea coast and in the North Caucasus region. Starting today, temperatures along the Black Sea coast are predicted to soar to 15–20°C, even touching 22°C in the Tuapse-Sochi region. This unseasonably warm weather is set to continue throughout the week, with highs 3–6°C above the seasonal average. However, this warmth won't be uniform across the region. In the North Caucasus mountains, daytime readings will range from a cooler 7–12°C, locally reaching 16°C.

The warm spell will be accompanied by severe weather conditions. From October 24–26, Krasnodar Krai will face severe thunderstorms, with heavy rain and gusty winds expected in Astrakhan Oblast and Adygea on October 26. Karachay-Cherkessia is expected to receive heavy snow, sleet, and rain on October 24 and 26. Meanwhile, Crimea is forecast to have heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gale-force winds of 20–25 meters per second on October 24–25.

Inland, Stavropol Krai, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, and Chechnya will see heavy rain and thunderstorms on October 26. Kabardino-Balkaria's mountainous regions are expected to get snow and sleet with winds of 15–20 m/s. Chechnya and Dagestan may see highs of up to 20°C. Rostov Oblast will experience storms, hail, and gusty winds up to 22 m/s on October 25–26.

Daytime highs over the weekend (October 25–26) are expected to reach 10–17°C, with some areas seeing 18–21°C. While the warm weather is a departure from the usual autumn chill, the storms and heavy rain pose significant challenges for the region.
