Southern Mindanao women unite on 8 March 2026 to demand economic justice

Women's rights groups in Southern Mindanao are preparing for a major rally on International Working Women's Day. The event, set for 8 March 2026 at Freedom Park, will demand economic relief and government accountability. Organisers say rising costs and low wages have pushed families to the brink.

Gabriela Southern Mindanao, Gabriela Youth Davao, and Sabokahan have called on women to join the protest. The rally's theme, 'International Working Women's Day 2026: Kababayen-an, Makigbisog! Isalikway ug Panubagon ang Korap, Palisod, ug Pasistang Rehimeng US-Marcos-Duterte,' highlights demands for systemic change. At least 300 participants are expected to gather on the date.

Rose Hayahay, secretary-general of Gabriela-Southern Mindanao, stressed that soaring inflation and stagnant wages leave families struggling to afford essentials. She urged the government to scrap the 12% VAT on basic goods and hold corrupt officials to account.

Allyssa Ancheta, chairperson of Gabriela Youth Davao, echoed these calls. She demanded transparency from politicians linked to corruption and pushed for the removal of VAT on everyday items. The groups argue that economic pressures disproportionately harm women, who often manage household budgets.

The rally will put pressure on authorities to address cost-of-living issues and corruption. Organisers want immediate VAT removal on essentials and stronger anti-graft measures. Their demands come as inflation continues to strain low-income households across the region on the date.
