Tensions Escalate in Southern Lebanon as Israel Continues Cross-Border Operations

The fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, effective since November 27, 2024, has faced renewed challenges following a series of Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on July 24, 2025. These air strikes mark a continuation of Israel's cross-border operations, which have been a source of contention and violation of the ceasefire deal.

The strikes targeted several locations in southern Lebanon, including Mahmoudiya, Zaghrin, the outskirts of Sajd, Ansar, Zarariya, Reyhan Heights, and the heights of the Tuffah region. The Lebanese Army Command did not provide further details about the ongoing operations.

The Lebanese Army Command announced the arrest of three Lebanese citizens during a series of security operations, alleging that they were part of a terrorist cell affiliated with Daesh (ISIS). The terrorist cell, which was arrested earlier, was planning to carry out attacks against the Lebanese Army under the direction of external Daesh leaders. The Army Command is continuing efforts to apprehend additional members linked to the terrorist cell.

The ongoing security operations in Lebanon are separate from the cross-border operations between Israel and Hezbollah. However, the attacks intensify concerns over a broader regional conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with regional tensions continuing to escalate.

The airstrikes and the arrests come amid ongoing tensions and retaliatory exchanges along the Lebanon-Israel border. The attacks intensify concerns over a broader regional conflict, with both Israel and Hezbollah maintaining their respective stances.

Israel has not formally commented on the raids or the ongoing airstrikes in Lebanon. Hezbollah, on the other hand, has accused Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement thousands of times with repeated assaults. The situation remains volatile, with regular Israeli strikes, Hezbollah’s armed stance unchanged, and political deadlock preventing full implementation of the agreement as of late July 2025.
