Firefighters in southern France have made significant progress in battling a wildfire near Narbonne, with authorities reporting that the massive blaze is now under control and expected to stabilize by Sunday.
The wildfire, which started on August 5 near the village of Ribaute, has spread across the Corbières hills between Narbonne and Carcassonne, causing destruction and disruption in its path. At its peak, the fire forced evacuations of about 1,550 people and the closure of the A9 motorway, a key route between France and Spain.
Despite these hardships, aerial firefighting support was mobilized, and the fire’s spread slowed significantly overnight. By Friday evening, the last of the evacuated people were able to return to their homes and apartments.
As of Sunday morning, the fire had burned over 16,000 hectares and destroyed or damaged at least 36 residential buildings and around 40 vehicles. One woman died in her house, and another suffered severe burns.
Firefighters, numbering around 1,400, are monitoring approximately 90 kilometers of road to prevent the fire from reigniting and to avoid another closure of the coastal highway. They are aiming to halt the fire’s progress by the end of the day, but dry, hot winds are expected on Sunday, which could fuel the fire once again.
Officials have expressed cautious optimism about achieving lasting calm and stabilizing the situation soon, but the fire remains active as of Sunday. The local wine community, which has suffered damage to vineyards, has shown determination to recover.
Firefighters described the containment as a "classic job but on an extraordinary scale," and they will continue to work tirelessly to bring the fire under control and ensure the safety of the local community.
