Friends and foes alike couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the recent soiree of Amazon's titan, none other than the one and only Jeff Bezos. The extravagant bash saw a cavalcade of well-heeled guests jetting in from all corners of the globe, with celebrities advocating for climate change repping the VIP list. Leonardo DiCaprio, yes, that Leonardo DiCaprio, made an appearance, creating a peculiar irony that left many scratching their heads.

As the mercury skyrocketed over the weekend, the authorities in Southern Europe issued urgent advisories sweating bullets. It seems the relentless heat might even pose a health hazard for the general populace, with Italy taking the heat record with a blistering 48.8 degrees since 2021. The heatwave stretched across major cities such as Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna, and Turin—quite the balmy tour.

France, gripped by the fiery heat, has set its sights on the Mediterranean region, urging its citizens to tread carefully, lest they find themselves caught up in a frenzy of wildfires. Forests have even been deemed off-limits as temperatures climb to a forecasted 39 degrees on Saturday.

Spain and Portugal are battening down the hatches as the thermometer threatens to kiss 42 degrees on Sunday, teasing little respite even at night with temperatures staying above 25 degrees. Lisbon, so charming under normal circumstances, will have to bear the heat, with similar predictions for Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Balkans are feeling the squeeze. Croatia is sounding the alarm for Zagreb and the eastern regions, still in recovery from weekend wildfires that razed dozens of homes along the southern coast. Albania, with a smoldering eight wildfires ignited within 24 hours, is also in the crosshairs as parts of Serbia swelter under the heat, bumping up against the 39-degree mark.

Greece, already steeped in smoke from raging wildfires, won't get the chance to cool off just yet. Since Sunday, fires on the Aegean island of Chios continue torching over 4000 hectares of land, a tumultuous testament to the heatwave's devastating power.

In the face of this unprecedented heat and the fires it fuels, Southern Europe braces for a weekend it won't likely forget.

The community is urged to follow strict health and safety measures due to the increasing danger of wildfires, as the heatwave in Southern Europe continues to smolder. The alarming climate change raises concerns among environmental scientists, as the unusual weather patterns are becoming more frequent.

The authorities encourage the public to protect the environment by adopting energy-saving policies and practices during the heatwave, as the ongoing scorching temperatures contribute to urging the need for environmental protection.
