Southern Australia braces for a temperature rollercoaster ride over the upcoming week during spring.
A cold frontier is set to cross through Australia, resulting in a significant temperature drop across various regions. This weather system, which delivers the best falls for southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales - west of the ranges rather than to the east, is not a repeat of the big weather system from last week, as the feed of moisture isn't as huge.
The term "cold frontier" originated during World War 1. This weather phenomenon is characterized by a fight between hot and cold weather, where hot air from the north surges southwards during spring, brought on by northerly winds ahead of a cold frontier. If the air behind the front has taken a path from near Antarctica, the temperature drop can be especially pronounced.
As the cold frontier moves over Queensland, New South Wales, Southeast Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania at the end of the week and into the weekend, a band of rain is associated with these cold frontiers, especially when there is a connection to tropical moisture. This weather system is not a cut off low driving huge falls for those in its path - it's just a standard cold frontier.
In this weather pattern, the current warm winds reaching southeastern Australia at the end of the week will be replaced by colder air expected to surge through after the warmer winds. These northerly winds are often powerful and gusty due to a tight pressure gradient ahead of the front.
The next cold frontier is expected to cross much of Queensland, NSW, eastern SA, Victoria, and Tasmania. Melbourne's expected temperature will rise to the mid-20s on Friday and struggle to make the mid-teens on Saturday. On the other hand, Perth's temperature will be in the high-teens on Friday and up in the high-20s by Sunday.
In dry areas, the cold frontier brings a sharp change in temperature, howling winds, and raised dust. Western Tasmania will also do very well from this weather system. It's important to note that these cold frontiers are a common occurrence during the spring season in Australia.
A day reaching 30C in Mildura (Victoria's northwest) can occur, followed by snow falling to low levels in Tasmania the next day. As always, it's essential to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during such weather changes.
