Fire engulfs seaside retreats in Athens, cause remains uncertain. A blazing inferno has erupted in the southeastern region of Athens, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake. Plumes of thick smoke scorch the skies as numerous vacation homes go up in flames, incinerating vast swaths of bush and forest.

Residents of Palaia Fokaia, a popular seaside escape 60 kilometers southeast of Athens, were warned via emergency Text messages to evacuate the area immediately. Many of these vacation homes are owned by city dwellers, providing a getaway from the hubbub of the capital.

First wave of tourist evacuations

Eleven tourists were safely rescued from their vacation homes by local law enforcement, as reported by Greek broadcasters. Initial reports indicate that hotel facilities were spared from the blaze's wrath, though the situation remains volatile.

A fire department spokesperson confirmed that twelve helicopters and firefighting aircraft, alongside the crews of 80 fire trucks, are actively engaged in battling the blaze. Over 90 firefighters and numerous volunteer helpers are laboring around the clock to quell the inferno, using ground and air operations.

Civil defense issues extreme fire warning

Temperatures have soared to almost 40°C (104°F) across much of Greece, accompanied by winds reaching strength six with powerful gusts in some areas. The Greek civil defense has repeatedly sounded the alarm, warning that the combination of heat, dryness, and winds can quickly convert even the smallest ignition into a major conflagration.

Intriguingly, the root cause of this specific fire near Athens remains a mystery, though Greek authorities remain vigilant in the wake of recent wildfire incidents. Arson investigations are ongoing for several incidents, including the major blaze on the island of Chios, raising concerns about deliberate fires in the region. However, definitive confirmation regarding the Athens fire is yet to surface.

As the battle against the inferno continues, authorities intensify their efforts to safeguard lives and property, while the community remains on high alert.
