South Korea's Won Yun-jong joins IOC Athletes' Commission after historic vote

South Korea's Won Yun-jong has been elected to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Athletes' Commission. He becomes only the third Korean athlete to hold this position. His appointment follows a vote by fellow competitors at the Paris 2024 Games.

Won Yun-jong secured the role after receiving 1,176 votes from 2,393 athletes. He stood out among 11 candidates, earning the highest number of votes in the election.

The bobsledder previously made history by leading Korea's four-man team to its first Olympic medal in the event. That achievement came at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Beyond competition, he has worked on multiple sports commissions, pushing for athletes' rights and fair conditions in sport.

President Lee Jae Myung of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee congratulated Won on his election. The Athletes' Commission now includes 22 members, with 12 of them newly elected over the past five years. These selections followed the Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024 Olympics.

Won Yun-jong's election adds another Korean voice to the IOC's decision-making body. His experience as an Olympic medallist and advocate for athletes will shape discussions on policy and fairness. The commission's newest members will serve until the next election cycle begins.
