South Korea's WBC triumph sparks online fury from Taiwanese fans
South Korea, having advanced to the World Baseball Classic (WBC) quarterfinals for the first time in 17 years, secured their knockout stage spot with a 7-2 victory over Australia. Their victory, however, sparked a wave of online abuse from Taiwanese fans directed at Korean player Moon Bo-gyeong.
The decisive match took place at Tokyo Dome, where Korea dominated Australia with a five-run lead. Moon Bo-gyeong played a key role, recording three hits in five at-bats, including a home run and four RBIs.
With this victory, Korea qualified for the quarterfinals for the third time since the WBC began in 2006, having previously reached the stage in 2009 and 2013. Their next game will be against the Pool D winner on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. in Miami.
Taiwanese internet users reacted angrily after the result eliminated Chinese Taipei from the tournament. Tens of thousands flooded Moon's social media with hostile comments, accusing him of intentionally striking out and using derogatory language. Some Taiwanese users later criticised the abuse, calling for more respect and acceptance of Korea's win.
Korea's quarterfinal appearance marks their first in nearly two decades. The team now prepares to face their next opponent in Miami. Meanwhile, the online backlash against Moon Bo-gyeong has drawn mixed reactions from Taiwanese fans.
