South Korean military aircraft crashes, incident occurs within national territory.

A military aircraft crash in Pohang, South Korea claimed the lives of all four crew members. The P-3C Orion navy plane, on a training mission, crashed on a forested mountainside in the afternoon.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the incident occurred six minutes after takeoff from the base in Pohang. The crash site, located near an apartment complex, ignited a subsequent fire that firefighters are currently working to extinguish. The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.

The South Korean Navy has established an investigative task force to determine the cause of the crash. As a precautionary measure, the Navy has temporarily grounded its fleet of P-3 aircraft while the investigation is ongoing.

The crash comes less than half a year after a tragic commercial plane crash in South Korea. In December 2024, a Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air crashed after landing at Muan Airport, resulting in the death of 179 passengers and two crew members. The investigations into the cause of this crash are still underway.
