South Korean Aide Announces Possible Meeting Between Lee and Xi in South Korea
The APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, scheduled to take place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1 in Gyeongju, South Korea, may see a significant event: Xi Jinping's first visit to the country in 11 years.
The Chinese President's attendance at the APEC meeting has been confirmed in principle, but the details of his visit, including the location and duration, are still being arranged. It is unclear whether Xi's potential meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will be separate from the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting or if it will take place at the presidential office in Seoul or during another event like the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation in Gyeongju.
President Lee's national security aide, Wi Sung-lac, mentioned the possibility of a bilateral meeting between the two leaders later this year. This meeting, if it occurs, would mark a significant step in the relationship between the two nations. Xi Jinping last visited South Korea in July 2014 to hold talks with former conservative President Park Geun-hye.
In addition to Xi, US President Donald Trump is also expected to attend the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju. The meeting will include leaders from APEC member economies.
Recently, President Lee Jae Myung returned from a trip to the United States, where he attended the United Nations General Assembly. It is yet to be confirmed whether his meeting with Xi Jinping will take place in the United States or in South Korea.
Wi's remarks were in response to a local news report suggesting a potential meeting between Xi and the South Korean president. However, there are no publicly available exact dates for a possible meeting between President Xi Jinping and President Lee Jae Myung in South Korea in 2021.
In a related development, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit South Korea in October. The visit could potentially pave the way for a more formal discussion between the two leaders.
As the details of Xi's visit to South Korea unfold, the international community will be closely watching the developments, hoping for a positive outcome that could strengthen the relationship between the two nations and contribute to regional stability.
