South Korea tightens rules for foreign workers' registration updates
South Korea has updated its rules for foreign residents. Certain job-related changes now require updates to Alien Registration details. The new system will be rolled out in two phases.
At present, foreign nationals must report specific employment changes to immigration authorities. The exact number of registered foreign residents in 2023 remains unclear, and no details have been shared on which sectors will see the most updates.
Until 30 June 2026, individuals can submit changes in person at immigration offices or online. They also have the option to use an authorised immigration agency for assistance. This flexibility aims to ease the transition into the new system.
From 1 July 2026, all updates must be filed online. The shift removes in-person and agency-based submissions, making digital reporting mandatory for compliance.
The updated rules mean foreign workers must stay alert to job-related changes that affect their registration. Until mid-2026, they can still choose between online and in-person reporting. After that, digital submissions will become the only method allowed.
