South Korea stuns China in a thrilling FIBA World Cup qualifier opener

South Korea’s men’s national basketball team kicked off the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers with an epic victory. They defeated China 80-76 in their opening match, ending a two-game losing streak against their rivals. The team now prepares for their next qualifier, a free game against Thailand in Wonju, Gangwon, on Monday.

The game began with Korea taking an early lead, finishing the first quarter 24-16. They maintained control throughout, extending their advantage to 47-34 by halftime and 61-52 by the third quarter. Despite China’s efforts, Korea held on for an 80-76 win.

Lee Hyun-jung was the standout performer, scoring 33 points—the highest in the match. Teammates Lee Jung-hyun and An Young-jun contributed 13 points each. Interim head coach Chun Hee-chul later praised the players for their focus and execution of the game plan.

South Korea sits in Group B alongside Japan, China, and Chinese Taipei. The top three teams from each group, plus the best fourth-placed team, will advance to the second round. This stage is the first step towards securing a spot in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.

Next, Korea will face China again on Monday in Wonju, Gangwon, before taking on Thailand in their following qualifier.

The win marks a strong start for Korea in the qualifiers. If they maintain this form, they will strengthen their chances of progressing to the next round. Their next test comes against Thailand, with another rematch against China also looming.
