APEC Meeting in Incheon Focuses on AI-Driven Agricultural Innovation

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, held in Incheon, South Korea, brought together ministers and officials from 21 member economies to discuss measures aimed at bolstering food security in the region. The meeting, themed "Driving Innovation in Agri-food Systems for Shared Prosperity," took place from Sunday to Saturday.

The gathering focused on strategies to address challenges from climate change and supply chain disruptions by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to advance agricultural innovation, enhance supply chain resilience, and promote sustainable food systems.

Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs Song Mi-ryung emphasized the meeting's significance, stating that it is especially meaningful due to growing concerns over food security amid the climate crisis and global supply chain disruptions.

Specific strategies discussed included:

  1. Utilizing AI technology to improve agricultural productivity and respond to environmental challenges, aiming to drive innovation across agri-food systems.
  2. Collaborative development of a regional roadmap for food security by 2030, which includes integrating technological solutions like AI to strengthen food systems and supply chain stability.
  3. Fostering public-private dialogues to incorporate private sector perspectives on AI-driven growth and demographic changes affecting food systems.
  4. Emphasizing digital economy policies and anti-corruption frameworks that support transparency and efficiency in food supply chains.
  5. Addressing climate crisis impacts by adopting innovative technologies and practices to ensure sustainable food production and distribution.

In addition to discussing strategies for enhancing food security, the meeting also aimed to promote Korean food and agricultural products. The working-level meetings, which took place from Wednesday to Saturday, will continue to discuss APEC's road map for strengthening regional food security by 2030 and other related issues.

The APEC meeting in Incheon underscores South Korea's commitment to innovation in the agricultural sector and its role as a leader in this field. The meeting also highlights the region-wide commitment to food security through technological and policy innovation in agriculture.
