World Cup qualification action is heating up, with teams in both Europe and Asia duking it out for a spot in the 2026 tournament happening in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With the first Asian team to secure their spot being Japan, they've already claimed the bragging rights. Australia is currently in pole position to join them, though they'll have to beat Japan in Perth on Thursday and rely on a loss from third-placed Saudi Arabia at Bahrain. If all goes as planned, Australia will qualify, but a thrilling showdown against Saudi Arabia in a winner-takes-all clash on Tuesday could decide it all.

Coach Tony Popovic is confident, as they've put themselves in a strong position. Indonesia, four points behind Australia and one behind the Saudis, are mathematically in the running for an automatic place, but have their work cut out for them with upcoming matches against Indonesia and Japan.

It's looking bleak for China, hanging by a thread at the bottom of their Asian group. Even if they don't secure a top two spot, hope isn't lost. Third and fourth place teams will still advance to a further round of Asian qualifying.

In Group A, Iran has already claimed their spot, with Uzbekistan on the brink of historical qualification if they avoid defeat to the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi. Qatar isn't completely out of the running, but they'll need to place third or fourth to advance to the next round. They'll have their work cut out for them, hosting Iran before traveling to Uzbekistan, and will be coached by the experienced Julen Lopetegui for the first time.

Stay tuned as these qualification battles unfold!
