South Korea and Indonesia Forge Deeper Alliance With 16 New Agreements

South Korea and Indonesia have strengthened their ties by signing 16 new agreements and upgrading their relationship to a 'special comprehensive strategic partnership'. The deals cover trade, defence, energy, and technology, marking a significant step in cooperation between the two nations. Leaders from both countries met to formalise these plans in June 2025. President Lee Jae Myung and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held talks to expand collaboration across multiple sectors. Their discussions led to a joint statement addressing political, economic, technological, and sociocultural cooperation. A key focus was maintaining stable energy supply chains, with Lee highlighting Indonesia's role as a major energy provider amid concerns over Middle East instability.

The leaders also reviewed progress on the KF-21 fighter jet project, a flagship defence initiative. Beyond this, they announced three to four additional aerospace collaborations, including defence aircraft components and technology transfers. The exact number of formalised projects remains unclear due to varying classification standards. Financial cooperation was another highlight. The Bank of Korea and Bank Indonesia set up a framework for local currency transactions, enabling cross-border QR code payments. Additionally, the countries launched the 'Global AI Universal Basic Society Solidarity Initiative', aimed at fostering international AI development. Prabowo emphasised the complementary strengths of both nations, suggesting their partnership could drive mutual growth in trade, investment, and defence industries.

The agreements signed in June 2025 mark a deeper alliance between South Korea and Indonesia. With expanded defence projects, energy security measures, and financial frameworks in place, both countries have laid the groundwork for long-term collaboration. The upgraded partnership reflects their shared commitment to economic and strategic cooperation.
