South Australia inches closer to historic back-to-back Sheffield Shield glory

South Australia are on the brink of back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles after a dramatic turnaround in the 2025/26 final. Alex Carey's unbeaten century shifted momentum, leaving Victoria struggling at 72-5 in their chase of 196. A win would mark the first time since 1995/96 that the Redbacks have claimed consecutive titles. South Australia entered day four in trouble at 122-7, having been 98-5 at stumps the previous evening. But Carey's resilient 103 not out—scored off 168 balls with six fours and a six—revived their innings. His partnership with Nathan McAndrew (60) added 105 for the eighth wicket, pushing the lead to 195.

Earlier, Peter Handscomb (28) and Marcus Harris (35) had provided a steady start with a 67-run stand. Once dismissed, however, the middle order collapsed before Carey's knock rescued the team. Victoria's reply began poorly, slumping to 35-3 under pressure from Jordan Buckingham and McAndrew. By stumps, they had reached 72-5, still needing 94 more runs with only five wickets remaining. A year ago, South Australia famously chased 270 to beat Queensland in the final, but this time, they set the target instead. The Redbacks have won six Sheffield Shield titles in total, their last before this season coming in 2010. Another victory here would end a 29-year wait for consecutive triumphs.

Victoria face an uphill battle on the final day, requiring 94 runs with limited wickets left. South Australia's bowling attack will aim to finish the job and secure a historic second straight Shield. The result hinges on whether Victoria's lower order can defy the odds under pressure.
