South Africa's Debut Boxing Movie: Knuckle City

In the heart of Mdantsane, one of South Africa's most renowned townships known for its rich boxing history, a new sports drama film is making waves. "Knuckle City," written and directed by visionary filmmaker Jahmil XT Qubeka, offers an unflinching look at boxing, toxic masculinity, and life in this township.

The film delves into the lives of siblings Dudu and Duke, who learn harsh lessons from their father Art Nyakama. Art's toxic masculinity is evident as he urges his sons to protect and provide for their family, yet he is unfaithful to their mother. Dudu finds moderate success in boxing, while Duke becomes embroiled in criminal activities. By 2019, both brothers face challenges from younger competitors, reflecting a generational struggle within the community and the sport.

"Knuckle City" is notable for its gritty and realistic portrayal of Mdantsane's socio-economic realities and the personal demons of its characters. It explores the cycle of violence, poverty, and masculinity that shapes many lives in Mdantsane, often referred to as the boxing capital of South Africa. The film's depiction of bare-knuckle fighting and underground boxing culture also draws on traditional fighting practices like Musangwe, resonating deeply with local audiences.

Jahmil XT Qubeka, the film's creator, is an acclaimed South African filmmaker known for his bold storytelling and focus on social issues. With "Knuckle City," he aimed to confront complex themes such as toxic masculinity and systemic hardship in South African townships through the lens of sport, particularly boxing. The film has received positive critical attention and was South Africa’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, highlighting its cultural and cinematic significance.

"Knuckle City" partners with world boxing champion Zolani Tete to bring authenticity to the movie. The film was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Jahmil XT Qubeka's impressive filmography includes "Of Good Report," his sophomore feature film, which received multiple awards and plaudits, and "Sew the Winter to my Skin," which won numerous awards, including Best Film at the SAFTAs and Best Director at AFRIFF. In 2016, his short film 'Stillborn' was selected for a BRICS Anthology Collection.

As a co-owner and Creative Director of the award-winning company Yellowbone Entertainment, Qubeka has directed a variety of documentaries, television dramas, commercials, and feature films. His dedication to creating authentic, ground-breaking work of the highest standards continues to make him a prominent figure in South African cinema.

In "Knuckle City," Dudu, portrayed by Bongile Mantsai, is a down-and-out ageing boxer. Desperate to attain one fight that he believes will uplift his fractured family, Dudu enlists the help of his reckless but resourceful, gangster brother. The underbelly of the boxing world in Knuckle City is depicted as rife with criminality.

"Knuckle City" is a powerful examination of masculinity, violence, and survival in Mdantsane, brought to life through Jahmil XT Qubeka’s nuanced direction and his commitment to authentically portraying South African township life and boxing culture.

The film, "Knuckle City," also explores the world of entertainment beyond boxing, with scenes of local residents gathered around television sets to watch movies and TV shows, providing a stark contrast to the gritty reality of their lives in Mdantsane.

Moreover, during a pivotal moment in the film, Dudu and Duke are seen arguing over a football match on TV, illustrating their shared passion for sports besides boxing, further humanizing their characters.
