Germany's Federal Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius (SPD), has guaranteed extra military aid to Ukraine during a recent visit. This additional assistance amounts to a whopping €1.9 billion, Pistorius disclosed at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, held in Kyiv. Nevertheless, this proposed aid is subject to approval by the German parliament, the Bundestag, before being put to use.
Rehashing earlier commitments, Pistorius, at the conference, mentioned that Germany started the year with budgeted assistance for Ukraine totalling €4 billion. That amount has since fattened up to €7 billion, and an additional €1.9 billion is being considered, despite it not being a final decision yet. The funds are slated to become accessible "in the next few weeks and months" once the decision has been made in the parliament.
Germany plans to cover long-range fire systems manufactured in Ukraine with the fresh funds. Pistorius revealed that the first such systems would see the light of day in a matter of months. Furthermore, funds will also be allocated for the Ukrainian government and the military to purchase materials from their own defense industry, thereby maximizing its potential.
It's important to note that while Germany is providing substantial aid, its commitment doesn't extend beyond €9 billion in 2025. There's no mention of further funding arrangements beyond this amount, as the focus remains on effectively utilizing the approved funds for Ukrainian defense support[1][2][3]. It's also been clarified that Germany will not be supplying Taurus cruise missiles[3][4].
