Sophomore Sophie Quinones Sets New Wreckers' Women's Golf Scoring Mark at Holy Cross
Holy Cross Freshman Sophie Quinones Shines in Golf
Sophie Quinones, a freshman on the Holy Cross women's golf team, has made a record-breaking impact in her first year. Starting her golfing journey in high school, Quinones sought a scholarship and found her way to Holy Cross.
During the 2024-25 season, Quinones competed in eight out of ten tournaments, playing 20 rounds. Her consistent performance earned her recognition as the Hilton Garden Inn Crusader of the Week. On September 8, 2024, at the Bucknell Invitational, she set a new team record by shooting a final round 69, 1 under the par-70 course, marking her first time breaking even par in a round of golf.
Quinones' outstanding performance at the Bucknell Invitational resulted in a total score of 225 strokes, an average of 75 per round. This score placed her as the overall lowest scorer out of 13 teams.
Quinones' impressive freshman year has positioned her for continued success. She currently holds the all-time lowest round score of 69 and ranks third in all-time career lowest scoring average, with a 2024-25 season average of 80.55. Given her trajectory, she is poised to climb higher in Holy Cross’s all-time records and potentially achieve further accolades in collegiate golf.
However, Quinones will face increased competition, physical and mental demands, and the pressure of sustaining and surpassing her record-setting performances as she transitions beyond her freshman year. Maintaining a low scoring average and handling high expectations will be key factors in her continued development.
Despite the challenges ahead, the outlook for Quinones' future on the Holy Cross women's golf team is bright. Her faith in God, the support of her teammates and coaches, and her determination to exceed her own expectations will undoubtedly propel her forward.
Meanwhile, in other sports news, the Holy Cross men's ice hockey team has two Hobey Baker finalists, Aiden Konold '26 and Thomas Gale, also a senior. The Hobey Baker Memorial Award, a prestigious award in NCAA hockey, will not be announced for this season.
Additionally, the Holy Cross women's golf team hosted their first ever Crusader Invitational.
