Sophie Cunningham Suffers Season-Ending Injury in Tough Game Against Connecticut Sun

Sophie Cunningham, the WNBA player for the Indiana Fever, sustained a season-ending knee injury during the Fever's game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The injury occurred during the second quarter of Indiana's overtime win.

Cunningham, who was averaging 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game and making 13 starts in her first season with Indiana, collided with Connecticut's Bria Hartley during the game. The contact resulted in a technical foul for Cunningham, as she was run into and went down hard, immediately grabbing her knee and going down in evident pain [1][2][4].

Following the incident, Cunningham was helped off the court with a towel over her head. Her mother, Paula Cunningham, initially expressed unhappiness with Hartley in a now-deleted post, but Sophie later defended her friend, stating that there was no ill intent and it was a basketball play [3].

The injury has dealt a significant blow to the Fever, who were already struggling with multiple season-ending injuries, including those to Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson. To bolster their roster, the team signed guard Shey Peddy on a hardship contract [5].

Despite the setback, Cunningham's popularity has never been higher. She joined the Fever roster earlier this season and has become close with teammate Kelsey Mitchell, also known as "Clark" [6]. The Fever are currently in the thick of the WNBA playoff race, and Cunningham's teammates and fans will undoubtedly rally behind her as she begins her recovery from the MCL tear.
