Songwriter Jill Sobule, renowned for her single 'I Kissed a Girl,' passes away in a residential blaze.
Revised Article:
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, singer-songwriter Jill Sobule, known for her 1995 hit "I Kissed a Girl," succumbed to a devastating house fire in Woodbury, Minnesota, on Thursday morning. Sobule was 66 years old.
The fire department discovered a deceased woman in the house fire, which was reported around 5:30 a.m., according to local authorities in Woodbury, a city approximately 16 miles east of Minneapolis.
"Jill Sobule was a dynamic powerhouse and a champion for human rights, whose music remains an integral part of our culture," manager John Porter expressed in a statement.
"I Kissed a Girl" climbed to the No. 20 spot on Billboard's modern rock chart, marking the first gay-themed record to achieve such a feat. Sobule's "Supermodel" from the "Clueless" soundtrack also found great success in the pop realm.
Most recently, Sobule created the coming-of-age musical "F--- 7th Grade," an off-Broadway production that premiered in 2022. The show was nominated for "outstanding musical" at the Drama Desk Awards the following year and was hailed as a New York Times Critic Pick.
An informal gathering will replace Sobule's scheduled performance in Denver at Swallow Hill, due to her untimely demise.
In 2008, Katy Perry released "I Kissed a Girl," which was not a cover of Sobule's song. After Sobule made playful, sarcastic comments that were misinterpreted by Perry fans, she became a target of criticism. In response, Sobule wrote on The Huffington Post, "I may have been a touch cynical about the business, but I have never really been angry or held ill feelings towards Katy herself... I was actually in a small way happy to not be the 'Kissed a Girl' girl anymore."
Sobule is survived by her brother, James Sobule, her sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Sobule, her nephews, Ian Matthew Sobule and Robert Sobule, and his wife, Irina. More formal tributes and memorials are being planned for the summer.
