Sonamarg Avalanche Strikes Without Casualties After Timely Warnings

An avalanche service struck the popular Sonamarg tourist area in Jammu and Kashmir late on Tuesday night. The incident occurred at around 10.12 pm, but no casualties were reported due to timely precautions. Heavy snowfall has disrupted travel across the region, including flights and road closures.

The avalanche hit Sonamarg, located in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, after warnings were issued a day earlier. The Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority had alerted residents and authorities about high-risk avalanche service conditions in the area on January 28, 2026. The timely precautions helped avoid any loss of life.

The region has experienced moderate to heavy snowfall over the past 24 hours. As a result, the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed due to snow buildup along the Qazigund-Banihal stretch. Air services at Srinagar airport were also cancelled, leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. Train services between Banihal and Budgam faced brief disruptions but resumed after crews cleared the tracks. Despite the challenges, no major injuries or fatalities were reported in the aftermath of the avalanche.

The avalanche in Sonamarg caused travel disruptions but no casualties. Authorities had issued warnings in advance, which helped prevent harm. With snowfall continuing, transport services remain affected across parts of Kashmir.
